Fireplace Surrounds

Fireplace Tile & Stone Surround Installation in San Diego

A tiled or stone fireplace becomes the focal point of the room. Our certified installers set porcelain, natural stone, and quartzite surrounds and hearths to last, using heat-appropriate materials and proven setting methods.

A fireplace surround is where craftsmanship shows. The tile or stone frames the firebox, ties into your mantel, and often runs floor to ceiling as the anchor of a living room. Done right, it reads as a single, continuous piece of the home. Done wrong, you see every uneven joint and lippage line.

San Diego homes run the full range, from Spanish and Mediterranean interiors to Craftsman bungalows in North Park and South Park, mid-century homes around Kensington and Mission Hills, and coastal contemporary builds near the beaches. We help you choose a material and layout that suits the architecture, whether that is a rustic stacked-stone hearth or a clean, modern full-height porcelain surround, and we set it to last.

Built to Last

Heat-Ready Materials, Set to Standard

A fireplace asks more of an installation than an ordinary wall, so we build to the standards the tile industry publishes, not shortcuts.

Non-Combustible Materials

Tile and natural stone are non-combustible, and we set them over cement backer board or sound masonry so the assembly around the firebox is built from materials rated for the job.

Manufacturer Clearances

Every fireplace has a listed clearance to combustibles for the firebox and mantel. We respect those clearances and local code so the finished surround is safe and correct.

TCNA & ANSI Methods

We install to the TCNA Handbook methods and ANSI A108 standards for substrate prep, setting materials, and movement, the same specifications architects and manufacturers call for.

Proven Setting Systems

We use trusted setting materials and substrates from names like Schluter and Laticrete, matched to porcelain, natural stone, or glass, so each material bonds the way it should.

How It Works

How a Fireplace Surround Comes Together

1

Design & Material

We look at the firebox, the wall, and your style, then help you choose tile or stone and a layout that frames the fire and fits the room.

2

Substrate & Prep

We remove the old surround if needed and build a flat, sound, non-combustible substrate the new material can bond to.

3

Setting & Layout

We dry-lay the pattern, then set each piece with the correct mortar, keeping joints even and the field flat with no lippage.

4

Grout, Seal & Finish

We grout, seal natural stone where needed, and clean up so the surround is ready to enjoy.

Financing Your Project

Ways to Pay for Your Tile & Stone Project

Many homeowners fund a remodel through a home-equity line of credit (HELOC), a home-equity loan, or an FHA 203(k) renovation loan, and we're happy to discuss monthly payment options during your estimate.

These are common ways homeowners spread the cost of a larger tile or stone project over time. Terms, rates, and approval depend on your lender and your situation, and we are glad to talk through what fits your budget when we quote your project.

Questions

Fireplace Tile FAQ

Can you tile over a brick or masonry fireplace?

In most cases yes. We can set tile or stone directly over sound masonry, or add the correct backer board first. We check that the surface is stable and prep it properly so the new surround bonds and stays put for years.

What tile is best for a fireplace surround?

Porcelain, natural stone like marble and travertine, quartzite, and glass all work well because tile and stone are non-combustible. The right choice depends on your style, the firebox type, and how much of the wall you want to cover. We help you weigh the options.

Do you keep the required clearance to the mantel and firebox?

Yes. Every fireplace has a listed clearance to combustibles for the firebox and any wood mantel. We respect those clearances and local San Diego building code so the finished surround is both safe and correct.

Can you do a full floor-to-ceiling fireplace wall?

Yes. Full-height surrounds are one of our most requested looks. We plan the layout so joints stay continuous and balanced from the hearth all the way up, and we handle two-sided, see-through fireplace walls as well.

Do you install the hearth too?

Yes. We tile or set stone hearths, raised ledges, and benches to sit flush and level with the surround, finished as one clean piece.

How long does a fireplace surround take?

Most fireplace surrounds take a few days, including prep, setting, grouting, and sealing. Full-height or two-sided walls and detailed stonework take a little longer. We give you a clear timeline with your written estimate.

Do you seal natural stone fireplaces?

Yes. Marble, travertine, limestone, and other porous stone should be sealed to resist soot, stains, and moisture. We seal it correctly and show you how to keep it looking good.
